Panthers Reverse Early Momentum, Serve Past Wildcats

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats held the advantage early, but could not hold it. Clark Atlanta reversed the opening set moment with 10-straight points and served past Fort Valley State, 3-0, in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball Tuesday evening.

After leading 14-7 and then 16-10, the Wildcats (3-12/3-13 SIAC) saw the Panthers' (7-7/7-3 SIAC) Imani Baker serve nine points in a row to put her team ahead 20-16. Clark Atlanta rode the serving waive to a 25-20 opening win, before it took the next two by 25-21 and 25-22 finals.

Nia Bell continues to lead the FVSU attack with 10 kills to go with 10 digs and three block assists and an ace. Ashley Simmons-Blair dug 11 visitor attacks and Rita Davis handed out 13 assists to go with four digs and two blocks. Nia Thomas and India King both chipped in three kills apiece.

The Panthers finished the night with nine service aces as a team with Baker having three of them. Ashley Elmore led all hitters with 11 kills and Sierra Nelson had 37 assists.

Following a home kill by Ceirra Wright and back-to-back CAU attack errors, FVSU went in front 14-7 in set one. The Wright kill turned out to be the last Wildcat offensive kill of the set as the Panthers posted 18 of the next 24 points for the opening victory.

FVSU battled late in set two and pulled to within three points late, 24-21, but it was unable to get any closer.

The Wildcats started strong in the third set by a 6-2 margin. Trailing 7-4, the Panthers netted five consecutive points for the 9-7 advantage. FVSU tied the set at 16-16, but Clark Atlanta killed three points in a row before a pair of home attack errors make it a 21-16 margin. The home team made one final run with two points in a row to make it 24-22, but one final CAU kill ended the match.

Tentatively, FVSU is scheduled to host Paine College on Thursday night, Oct. 11, at 6 p.m. A decision will be forthcoming on the match's status due to Tropical Storm Michael.
