Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Wildcats Second-Half Push Not Enough Against Tigers

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – It was another regionally-ranked, early-season opponent for the Wildcats women's basketball team Tuesday night. Fort Valley State pushed hard in the 11 minutes of the second half, but it was not enough against the West Alabama, 95-59.

After a rocky opening seven minutes, the Wildcats (0-3) took a large deficit of 48-19 into the half. FVSU put together a strong third 10-minute period as Alex Booker and Nola Carter netted back-to-back buckets, before Alicia Franklin downed a trey to force a home timeout at 7:19 as the margin was down to 25 points, 53-28. A Carter layup and Franklin 3-pointer cut the difference by another point at 1:55 in the third as FVSU won the stanza 23-18. Torri Myers sunk a triple 1:04 into the final 10 minutes to equal the 24-point margin, 71-47, but the West Alabama lead was too much.

Franklin earned top Wildcat scoring honors with 15 points and had four assists. Carter chipped in 12 points as the other double-figure scorer to go with four rebounds and three assists.

Keaundra Cox added eight points, four boards and two helpers. Myers made 3 of 5 from the field for seven points, including the one 3-pointer. Booker finished with six rebounds, four points and a pair of assists.

It was a tough opening seven minutes as the Tigers went out to a 16-0 advantage they would never give up. FVSU could not come out any colder in the contest as it misfired on its first seven shots and committed five turnovers in the opening 6:35, before Myers hit a jumper.

FVSU heads to familiar territory for a weekend challenge. The Wildcats open the Peach Belt/Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Challenge against the Cougars of Columbus State in a 5 p.m. Friday evening, Nov. 16, contest held on Albany State's campus.
