Pesky Wildcats Fight Hard Against High-Powered Cougars

ALBANY, Ga. – The Wildcats continue to play top-region teams in the early season. The pesky Fort Valley State women's basketball team fought hard before high-powered Columbus State pulled away midway through the third quarter of the 98-63 final.

Following a big 19-2 Cougars (1-0) second-quarter outburst to go ahead by 18 points, the Wildcats (0-4) answered with their own 14-0 run, including a pair of Nyah Dismukes buckets to make it a 45-37 contest heading to half. Torri Myers cut the FVSU deficit to seven points to start the third quarter, 46-39, and Alicia Franklin downed a trey to make it 53-44 at 7:01 in the same frame. Columbus State ran off the next nine points and did not allow FVSU back into the flow.

Franklin and Nola Carter were the lone double-figure FVSU scorers at 10 points apiece. Myers chipped in nine points. All three Wildcats of Keaundra Cox, who had five rebounds, Jalin Moye and Jah'ne Brown added seven points. Dismukes contributed six tallies and three assists.

It was a dominate performance from Columbus State's Tatiana Wayne, who poured in 29 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

The Cougars started quick as they ran out to an 11-2 advantage in the first 2:35 and 17-5 score before the Wildcats were able to get on track. FVSU scored eight of the next 10 points, including the last four by Myers to pull within 19-13 with 3:46 in the opening frame. A Franklin layup finished the first 10 minutes to make it 26-19.

Heading to the second quarter, Brown hit a jumper to start the scoring for what would be the closest the Wildcats would get all night at 26-21.

FVSU completes its week with the second part of the Peach Belt Conference/Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Challenge with a 5 p.m. Saturday contest against Georgia Southwestern at Albany State.
