Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Hurricanes Furious Third-Quarter Finish Overtakes Wildcats

ALBANY, Ga. – The Wildcats, again, pushed their women's basketball opponent hard on Saturday evening. After Fort Valley State made it a two-possession game, Georgia Southwestern answered with a furious third-quarter finish and recorded an 84-64 final.

For all of the first half, the Wildcats (0-5) were right with the Hurricanes (3-1) with two early leads and a one-possession margin the majority of the rest of the half. Ga. Southwestern, though, ran off the opening 20 minutes' final eight points and just when Alicia Franklin's eight-straight FVSU points went on the 14-0 extended run to wrap up the third frame.

Franklin connected on 7 of 10 from the floor, including 3 of 5 from long-range for a Wildcat season-high of 24 points to go with three rebounds.

Freshman Torri Myers narrowly missed her first double-double with 11 points and nine boards. Keaundra Cox added eight rebounds and seven points, while Nola Carter posted six points and six caroms.

Ga. Southwestern saw Morgan Towells and Lele Young pace its offense with 14 and 13 points.

Cox started the night leading the Wildcats effort. The junior hit a triple to give FVSU its first early lead, 3-2, and its second advantage, 5-4. A pair of Franklin free throws pulled the Wildcats back to within a point, 16-15, with 2:31, which would be the closest they would get over the final 32:31.

Myers chipped away at the Hurricanes lead in the first part of the second quarter with back-to-back layups for her team, 23-20 and 25-22. Aireyanna Conners hit a jumper (27-24 at 6:19) and Cox made a free throw (27-25 at 5:51), before Ga. Southwestern had its first double-digit cushion, 35-25.

In the third period behind 49-34, Franklin took over the FVSU comeback effort when she downed a jumper and two-straight triples to cut the margin down to only six points, 48-42, with 4:12 showing. Then, the Hurricanes happened with 14 unanswered points.

FVSU shaved a point off the difference three times in the final quarter, but it was unable to get any closer.

FVSU will make it first home appearance in the HPE Complex on Tuesday night, Nov. 20. The Wildcats host the Wolves of West Georgia starting at 6 p.m.
