Golden Rams Prevail over Wildcats in 29th Fountain City Classic

COLUMBUS, Ga. – On a perfect weather day and full A.J. McClung Stadium, the Wildcats found it a tough season finale. Albany State scored on its first possession and converted an interception and two blocked punts into 17 more points to prevail, 40-6, over Fort Valley State in the 29th edition of the football Fountain City Classic.

Trailing 13-0, the Wildcats (2-8/2-4 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East) pulled to within one score. Mekall Yancie pulled in a throwback tight end screen from quarterback Garrel Quainton and rumbled 15 yards to pay dirt for a 13-6 score at 7:40 in the second quarter.
 
Albany State (7-3/5-0 SIAC East) kicker Gabrie Ballinas booted third of four and third field goal of the first-half from 34 yards out with five second left opening stanza, before his teammates added 24 points in the second 30 minute for the win.

Makell Yancie weaved through the defense for the 15-yard FVSU 2nd Quarter touchdown.
The Wildcats found it tough to get its offensive engine running. FVSU totaled only 157 yards of total offense, 103 through the air. Jeffery Mack grabbed two passes for 70 yards and Yancie added an 11-yard, first-down grab to go with his 15-yard score.
 
The Golden Rams defense also held all-purpose back Lorenzo Smothers to 75 yards with 68 of those yards coming off four kick-off returns. He pulled in only one pass for seven yards receiving.
 
Strong safety Cameron Young received FVSU Most Valuable Player acclaim for the day. The junior had a team-high nine tackles, seven solo, and a pass breakup. Zach Anderson and David Brown both added eight stops.
 
It was the first game of the year the FVSU defense finished without a sack. Albany State produced 302 total offensive yards with 225 of those coming on the ground.
 
Running back Tracy Scott ran 42 yards on the opening play of the day and finished with 121 yards on 12 attempts on his way to being the ASU MVP. Defensively, Jalen Bush intercepted a passed and blocked a punt, which he returned for the final score of the day 15 yards.
