No. 23 Blazers Use First Half to Defeat Wildcats

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Starting the season against a ranked foe, the Wildcats put up a fight. No. 23 Valdosta State used a first-half advantage to defeat the Fort Valley State women's basketball team, 71-52, on Friday night's season opener.
 
The Blazers (1-0) went out to a 17-8 first-quarter lead and built it to 40-21 by the half. The Wildcats (0-1), though, played hard in the second half as they won the third quarter, 18-15, and tied for the final 20 minutes of play (31-31).
 
Nola Carter paced FVSU with 17 points on 6 of 9 from the floor and grabbed five rebounds. Alicia Franklin was right behind with 13 points and the smallest player made it a double-double with 10 rebounds.
 
Kendra King led all scorers for Valdosta State with 19 points.
 
FVSU will be right back on the court in an early noon tip against West Florida to finish the opening Gulf South Conference/Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference challenge.
