Magicians Edge Wildcats Women’s Basketball in Final Six Minutes

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats had the scoring slim advantage in the early final period, but could not hold it. Lemoyne-Owen edged out the women's basketball win over Fort Valley State, 53-48, over the final six minutes on Monday afternoon.

The Wildcats (1-11/1-4 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) took a 37-35 lead into the final 10 minutes after a Nola Carter 3-point play. Trailing 41-38 with 6:13 remaining, the Magicians (5-8/3-3 SIAC) netted the next seven points and never trailed from there to hold on for the win.

Carter, who had eight rebounds, and Alicia Franklin finished with FVSU scoring honors with 11 points apiece. Nyah Dismukes added eight points, seven assists and three boards. Torri Myers chipped in nine rebounds and five tallies off the home bench.

Dana Gattis scored the first five points of the key Lemoyne-Owen run and topped all players with 22 points on 7 of 13 from the floor.

Leading 10-8 seven minutes into the game, FVSU scored seven of the final nine points with Franklin having five of those for a 17-10 lead. An Alex Booker layup off a Kaylin West pass made it 19-10 Wildcats with 9:32 left in the second frame. The Magicians ran off the following nine points and the two squads went to half tied at 27-27.
