Wildcats Prevail in Five Sets over Rams

FORT VALLEY, Ga. -- In a total team effort, the Wildcats did not give up, but they were stronger as the match went on. Fort Valley State claimed the final two sets and outlasted rival Albany State to open the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball schedule Tuesday night.

Leading by a single point, 16-15, in the fourth set, the Wildcats (2-3) netted the next four points and never gave up the momentum as Nia Thomas killed the final point, 25-19, to force a game-deciding set. Tied for the seventh time of the fifth set at 14, Nia Bell  killed the next point for FVSU and the home team took away the big victory after an Albany State attack error made it 16-14.

The Rams (0-7) took the first and third sets by 25-15 and 25-16 scores before the Wildcats secured the second set, 25-14.

Bell paced the winning Wildcats with 13 kills and 17 digs. India King played tough on the front line with 12 kills, hit .281 and added three block assists. Thomas chipped in 10 kills of her own to go with eight digs.

Rita Davis set up 37 winners and lined a pair of aces, while Ashley Simmons-Blair kept 23 digs in play.

Both Jannai Cheeks and Keonna Hobbs finished with 11 kills apiece for the Rams.

Fort Valley State will have the weekend off due to the Hurricane Florence weather and it will pick up on Friday, Sept. 21, in a 5 p.m. match at Toccoa Falls.
