FVSU Sweeps Lane, Falls Shy in Five Against Central State

ALBANY, Ga. – A Wildcats improvement was seen on the second day of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Crossover volleyball event. Following a tough early morning match to SIAC West favorite Spring Hill, Fort Valley State swept past Lane College, before it fell shy in five sets against Central State.

Spring Hill (14-3) showed why it is slated as the SIAC favorite with a 25-6, 25-19 and 25-18 morning win over FVSU (3-9). The Wildcats rebounded for their best match of the season, 3-0, over the Dragons (25-19, 25-15 and 25-22).

FVSU split the first four sets in the third match against Central State (23-25, 25-19, 22-25 and 25-19). The Marauders held an 8-7 edge upon the side switch of the fifth set and never gave up the lead for the 15-10 match-deciding set score.

In the three matches over 11 sets, Nia Bell paced the Wildcat frontline with 43 kills and 29 digs with one double-double. India King added 23 kills, including an afternoon-high of 17 winners against Central State, and seven total blocks.

Nia Thomas chipped in 14 kills, while Ashaunti Brown had six kills and a pair of blocks versus Central State.

Setting the offense, Shantrila Mosley handed out a season-high 34 assists against Central State to go with 10 digs. Rita Davis had 32 assists of her own in the first two matches.

Ashley Simmons-Blair dug 30 Central State attacks and 19 swings from Lane.

Ceirra Wright contributed five kills in the final match with Jaelyn Franklin 21 digs on the day.
