Warhawks Break Open Third Quarter, Hold off Wildcats

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – After battling to a one-point margin at intermission, the Wildcats picked a bad time to go cold from the floor. Auburn-Montgomery won the third quarter by nine points and kept the final frame a two possession difference on its way to a 59-45 women's basketball win over Fort Valley State Wednesday evening.

An Alicia Franklin free throw gave what would be FVSU (3-13) its final lead at 31-30 with 1:00 left in the second quarter. The Warhawks (2-14) turned a one-point halftime lead into double digits, 53-43, over the next 10 minutes. The Wildcats pulled to within five points two times, 43-38 and 45-40, in the early fourth quarter, but they could get no closer.

Nola Carter went 6 of 11 from the field for a FVSU-high 16 points to go with four rebounds and four steals. Franklin added 13 points and nine boards. Keaundra Cox netted all eight of her points in the first half, including a pair of 3-pointers.

After starting the game down 8-2, FVSU battled back to within two points, 15-13 and 17-15, by the end of the opening 10 minutes.

Franklin started the second period with a trey for the first FVSU advantage, 18-17. The Wildcats led three more times with the largest margin of three points, 22-19, coming off a pair of Nyah Dismukes free throws at 7:00.

Auburn-Montgomery won the game in the third quarter. Neither team scored a point for the first 4:10 before the Warhawks downed a 3-pointer and outscored the Wildcats, 11-2, in the key period.

Following a solid 11 of 24 first half from the floor, FVSU saw a cover appear to go over the hoop in the second half. The Wildcats made only 4 of 33 in the second 20 minutes. Auburn-Montgomery also dominated on the glass, 50-30.

Victoria Morales paced the home team with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

FVSU has almost a week before it returns to Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Monday night, Jan. 21, at Clark Atlanta in a 6 p.m. contest.
