Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Chris Myers

FVSU Takes No. 3 Morehouse to Limit, Falls Just Short

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Wildcats traded blows all day with the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's nationally-ranked leader. Fort Valley State edged ahead with eight minutes left, but No. 3 Morehouse College answered and took away the 62-57 men's basketball win Saturday afternoon.

Trailing 48-44 with 9:44 left, D'Angelo Strickland laid in a bucket, before he found Jaylon McMillan on the wing for a trey and 49-48 FVSU (4-16/3-6 SIAC) lead at 8:05. Morehouse (14-2/8-2 SIAC), though, had one final counter punch in the form of an 8-0 spurt in the following 3:28 for a 56-49 advantage it would not give up again.

McMillan paced the Wildcats offense with 15 points to go with three rebounds and a pair of assists. K'Viontae Williams converted 6 of his 9 field goals for 12 points and added four boards and four assists. Brenton Cliette Jordan posted his second double-double with 10 points on 5 of 7 attempts and 10 caroms.

Shawn Foxbrennen chipped in eight points. Thomas Hardy had six points and three assists and Strickland six points himself and five boards.

Robert Andrews hit for 15 points to lead the Maroon Tigers.

FVSU saw 23 turnovers prove costly, while Morehouse had a 33-31 rebounding edge.

Trailing 2-0 early, Hardy assisted on a Cliette Jordan jumper, before he swiped and dunked the ball home for a 4-2 Wildcats lead. Shortly later, Foxbrennen downed a 3-pointer for a 9-7 FVSU advantage at 17:25, but it would be its last lead for the next almost 30 minutes of action. A Strickland dunk pulled FVSU within a point just before half, but Morehouse took a 33-29 score to intermission after a 3-pointer.

After the key home run following the Wildcats one-point lead, the Maroon Tigers enjoyed their largest lead of the day, 60-51, with 1:58 on the clock. FVSU was only able to add two Williams driving layups in the final two minutes for the 62-55 final.

FVSU travels back to Atlanta on Monday night, Jan. 21, when it plays at Clark Atlanta. Tip set for 8 p.m.
