Wildcats Return to SIAC Gridiron Play, Travel to Face Marauders

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – After a successful non-conference road upset last weekend, the Wildcats return to Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference gridiron play this Saturday afternoon. Fort Valley State travels to western Ohio and battles Central State in SIAC Crossover matchup.
 
The Wildcats (3-2/1-0 SIAC East) makes its second and longest road trip in as many weeks starting late Thursday night heading up north against the Marauders (2-3/1-0 SIAC West) for the Saturday, Oct. 12, 1 p.m. kick-off.

Last Meeting: Oct. 21, 2017 – FVSU win 24-19 at Central State
Game Summary: Down 13-10 at half, Slade Jarman completed an 18-yard TD pass with 3:35 in the 3Q to take a 17-13 lead. Jarman added a 23-yard scoring strike in the early 4Q (12:13) to make it 24-13, before the Wildcats won 24-19.

 GENERAL NOTES
  • Both teams come in off victories -- FVSU winning 33-29 at Fla. Tech & Central State with a 28-21 home win over Edward Waters
  • Two opponents are a combined 5-1 over the last 3 weeks – FVSU 3-0 & Central State 2-1 – 5-0 together vs. NCAA DII foes

  • 50 points vs. Benedict was the most since a 52-7 win over Morehouse on Oct. 28 of 2017 and last time team reached 50 points
  • Averaged 37.7 points (113 points total) in the last 3 winning weeks against 22.7 points allowed (68 points give up total)
  • Finished 2-0 against Region 2's Gulf South Conference
 
Marauders:
  • Comes off 5-5 season in 2018 – most wins since finishing with same record in 2015
  • Went 4-6 in both 2014 & 2012 – no more than 2 wins in a season since 2009
  • First 5 games were opposite type games in wins and lossesdecided by a combined 5 points:

Wildcats Offense:

  • Increased rushing production in each of last 3 weeks from 39 to 109 to 144 yards
  • RB Kentavious Thomas produced the most rushing yards in a calendar year with 76 yards on 13 carries. His 24-yard burst set to the Fla Tech 3-yd line where FVSU scored the game-winning TD on the next play
  • QB Slade Jarman made it two SIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors in a row – he passed for 254 yards on 22 of 38 attempts with a TD, while he rushed for 3 more TDs on 13 car. For 45 yds –
  • Jarman leads the SIAC with 1,243 yards (248.8 yd/gm) with 11 TDs…he is 436 yards and 4 TDs from better his full 2017 numbers of 1,678 yards and 14 TDs
  • 6 Wildcats have at least 9 catches
  • Shemar Bridges and QA Walker combined for 6 catches and 106 yards last week & are the lone 2 with 20+ catches of 24-356 and 21-270
  • Joseph Ross lead the group with 4 TD catches from his 17 rec. for 226 yards
 
Marauders Defense:
  • Average 35.8 points allowed & 460.8 yards of total offense per game
  • Despite winning the game allowed 418 yards to Edward Waters
  • Intercepted 4 passes vs Edward Waters
  • In 2 wins, allowed only an average of 20 points compared to 46.3 points in the 3 losses
  • LBs Karlen Abrams & Javion Williams both had 13 tackles last weekend
  • Williams leads defense with 48 TT & 1.5 TFLs, while Abrams has 32 TT & 3 TFL
  • DE Keandre Powell adds 33 TT & 1.5 TFL

Wildcats Defense
  • Allowed 32.6 points per game & 398.4 yards of total offense
  • Gave up only 22.6 points in last 3 weeks of wins – compared to 47.5 points in first 2 weeks
  • Registered 4 sacks, 10 TFLs, 3 forced fumbles, an interception and 6 pass breakups at Fla Tech
  • DE Demetrius Harris recorded his best game of his FVSU career with 7 TT, 5.5 TFL for 42 yds, 4.0 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles – he has 9.5 TFL and 6 sacks on the season
  • LB Aaron Dore added 7 TT, 2 TFL, a FF and one breakup vs Fla Tech – 36 TT and 5.5 TFL on year
  • LB Majeste Hansberry continues to lead the FVSU tacklers with 48 TT to go with 3 TFL
  • SS Zach Anderson paces the secondary with 34 TT
 
Marauders Offense
  • Average 17.0 points per game & 288.4 yards of total offense per contest
  • Scored season-best 28 points last week vs Edward Waters
  • Posted 20+ points in each of last 3 weeks at an average of 24.7 ppg

  • Totaled only 205 yards of offense a week ago (109 rushing & 96 passing)
  • RB Terrais Saffold is the offensive key with 27 carries for 107 yds and 2 TDs last week, while 128 car for 545 yards (109 ypg)a with 5 TDs. He also has 13 catches for 60 yds
  • QB Frank Cocio was 12 of 17 for 96 yds and an INT last Saturday, 54 of 99 for 535 yds with 7 INT to 2 TD
  • WR Dalene Brown leads the team with 21 catches for 319 yds and 2 TDs
 
FVSU Notes:
  • K/P Eli Mashburn earned the SIAC Special Teams Player of the Week – 9 pts on 2 of 2 FGs (24 & 25 yds) and 3 of 4 PATs; 4 punts for a 41.5 average and 53.3-yard average over 7 kick-offs
  • Wildcats makes final appearance at Wildcat Stadium for the FVSU Homecoming, Oct. 19 vs. Morehouse College at 2 p.m.
