Wildcats Look to Continue Recent Success, Face RV Panthers

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – After posting a pair of much-needed victories the past two weeks, the Wildcats look for more against a tough road night game this Saturday. Fort Valley State travels to the east coast of the Sunshine State where it faces Florida Tech.
 
The Wildcats (2-2) are fresh off their first road victory last weekend and make their longest trip of the season to date. Fort Valley State will line up against American Football Coaches Association Receiving Votes Florida Tech and its 3-1 mark. The Saturday, Oct. 5, kick-off is set for 7 p.m. at Panther Stadium.

Game Summary: Panthers scored the first 34 points of the game over the first 19:35 on their way to the 48-14 win. FIT went on to finish 8-3 that year before it lost in the NCAA DII First Round.

  • Wildcats second trip to Melbourne, second in a row of the short two-game series
  • Panthers lone trip to Fort Valley was in 2015
  • FVSU's 2nd of 2 road trips in Florida for 2019
 
Wildcats:
  • FVSU aims for 3rd win in a row for first time since the month of October in 2017. Won 4 in a row from Oct. 7-28
  • Last back-to-back road wins came in the 2017 4-game win streak with victories at Clark Atlanta on Oct. 7 and at Central State (Oct. 21)
  • 50 points vs. Benedict was the most since a 52-7 win over Morehouse on Oct. 28 of 2017 and last time team reached 50 points
  • Team has increased its point production each of the first 4 weeks of the season
  • Team Division II opponents points have decreased in each of the 3 contests
  • Held Benedict to fewest points allowed of the season (16)
 
Panthers:
  • Comes off 8-4 season in 2018 where lost in NCAA DII First Round
  • Head coach Steve Englehart is 31-25 in his 6th season
  • Received 5 votes in this week's AFCA DII Coaches Poll
  • First 3 games were decided by a combined 5 points:
        W, at Savannah State (23-22); W, at Newberry (30-28);L, at Delta State (30-28)
  • Upset nationally-ranked West Georgia (44-10) in home opener last week 
    Jumped out to a 13-0 lead in first 8:44, led 27-10 at half, and scored game's final 17 points in 3Q
 
WILDCATS OFFENSE VS PANTHERS` DEFENSE

Wildcats Offense:
  • Average 29.2 points & 326.2 yards of total offense
  • Totaled season-high 532 yards on 71 plays (7.5 yds/play) last week vs Benedict
  • Passed for 423 yards/Rushed for 109 yards (season-high rushing)
  • QB Slade Jarman made it two solid games in a row. The BOXTOROW National Player of the Week & SIAC Offensive Player of the Week went 21 of 30 after the 1stQ and finished 25 of 43 for 391 yds & 6 TDs. He also rushed for 19 yards on 8 carries for 410 yards of total offense
  • Joseph Ross had a day in just the 2Q where he had TD catches of 37, 14 and 37 yards. He finished his day with 5 catches covering 106 yards and the 3 TDs
  • Unit surpassed 100 net yards rushing for a game with 109 on 19 carries (5.7 yd/carry)
  • Along with Ross, unit had 5 other receiver record 40+ yards receiving led by Shemar Bridges' 87 yards on 4 grabs, including a 63-yd TD…Bridges leads WR corps at 20 rec. for 289 yds for season
  • QA Walker had his 4th 5-catch game with 5 for 51 yds. He has 19 for 231 yds on year
 
Panthers Defense:
  • Average 22.5 points allowed & 366.3 yards of total offense per game
  • Gave up 325 yards of total offense vs. West Georgia (134 rushing/191 passing)
  • Caused 4 turnovers (3 interceptions & 1 fumble) vs. West Georgia
  • LB Evan Thompson leads defense with 29 TT, 3.5 TFL, 1.5 sacks, & 1 INT
  • S John McClure also has 29 TT
  • DE Pat Banks has 27 TT to his credit  & 4 TFL; led team last wk with 8 TT & 3 TFL
 
WILDCATS DEFENSE VS. PANTHERS OFFENSE
Wildcats Defense
  • Allowed 33.5 points per game & 393.5 yards of total offense
  • Gave up a season low 16 points and 275 yards of total offense vs. Benedict
  • Unit recorded 7 sacks, forced 4 fumbles & 11 Benedict punts
  • DE Jahseari Patterson led team with 7 TT, 2 sacks, 3.5 TFL, 2 QBH & 1 FF
  • LB Kentron James added 6 TT & a sack
  • LB Majeste Hansberry has double-digit tackles in 3 of first 4 games; led team with 43 TT
  • LB Aaron Dore sits with the most solo tackles of 14 and 29 TT
  • SS Zach Anderson is 3rd with 28 TT
 
Panthers Offense
  • Average 31.3 points per game & 447.3 yards of total offense per contest
  • Scored at least 23 points with a high of 44 points last week
  • Jumped out to a 7-0 lead vs. West Georgia 56 seconds in off a 66-yd run by RB Drezyn Parson
  • Amassed 510 yards of offense (283 rush/227 pass), held the ball for 38:33 and was 10 of 16 in 3rd down conversions
  • QB Mike Diliello passed for 227 yds with 2 TDs & ran 94 yds with 2 more TDs; has 6 rush TDs & 221 yds (leads team in rushing), while passing for 570 yards with 4 TDs the last couple weeks
  • RB Parson had 74 yds rushing last week & 134 on 16 carries in 4 games
  • WR Miles Kelly has pulled in 15 catches for 372 yards and a TD
 
FVSU Notes:
  • Wildcats continue on the road next week (Oct. 12) in their longest trip of the season to Wilberforce, Ohio against SIAC West member Central State
