Wildcats Control Boards and Game Against Wolves

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – After giving new head coach Andrea Williams her first win last Saturday, the Wildcats added a home victory for her. Fort Valley State controlled the glass and four players hit double figures on the way to a 76-68 victory over West Georgia in the women's basketball home opener.

After a slow-starting first quarter, the Wildcats (2-1) came alive and reversed an early 7-point deficit into a 9-point lead on an Alicia Franklin jumper, 33-24, minutes before half. Following a 10-point intermission advantage, Nikki Culbreath pumped in a 3-pointer and increased it to 18-point margin, 56-38, before the freshman hit another to help stymie a late Wolves (2-1) comeback attempt.

FVSU hauled down 42 defensive rebounds and 63 total boards for the game compared to West Georgia's 37. Nola Carter paced by the team rebounders, but the senior posted an all-around effort of 17 rebounds, 12 points, seven assists, four blocked shots and a steal. Culbreath finished with high-point honors of 17 points on 6 of 12 shoots, 3 of 7 from long-range with three assists.

Franklin and Torri Myers joined the two Wildcats with 14 and 12 points to go with five boards apiece. Jah'ne Brown chipped in eight tallies and Taz Fanning nine caroms.

The Wolves forced 32 Wildcats turnovers, while Zaria Bankston led them with 16 points.

FVSU moves on to the Peach Belt Conference/Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Challenge this weekend in Columbus, Ga., starting with a 7 p.m. contest against Georgia Southwestern Friday evening.
