Hurricanes Hit Last-Second Shot, Clip Wildcats

COLUMBUS, Ga. – After an Alicia Franklin bucket pushed her team ahead with a second left, the Wildcats thought they edged out a close win. Georgia Southwestern had one final try and Jamesha Samuel sank the last-second 3-pointer in a heartbreaking result, 72-71, for the Fort Valley State women's basketball team Friday evening.
 
Trailing by a point with 1:42, Franklin put FVSU (2-2) back in from with two foul shots, 64-63. The Hurricanes (2-0) snuck back in front on another Samuel trey, before Jah'ne Brown put back a miss and made the conventional 3-point play for a 67-66 score at 47 seconds. Two Franklin free throws with 33 seconds was answered with a Ga. Southwestern 3-point play 10 seconds later for a 69-69 tie to set up the final two shots in less than two seconds.
 
The big Wildcats producer of the night was sophomore Torri Myers, who netted a career-best 26 points and pulled down 14 rebounds. The second-year player made 11 of 18 from the floor for her points along with three blocked shots and an assist.
 
Brown was the lone other double-digit Wildcat with 12 points to go with three rebounds, three steals and an assist. Nola Carter had the all-around game of eight points, nine rebounds, six assists, two blocks and two steals.
 
Franklin was held to two points until she added six tallies to it in the final 1:25 for eight on the night and five assists. Nikki Culbreath downed a pair of triples as part of her nine points, while the freshman had six rebounds and two assists.
 
FVSU shot well at 50.0% (27 of 54) and outrebounded GSW, 55-31. The Wildcats downfall was 39 turnovers, which resulted in 43 Hurricanes points off them.
 
Samuel and Morgan Towells led GSW with 14 points apiece.
 
FVSU turns around and faces host Columbus State on Saturday afternoon starting at 3 p.m. to complete the Peach Belt/SIAC Challenge.
