Early Turnovers Prove Costly, Wildcats Win Streak Snapped Against Tigers

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Wildcats have been notorious slow first-quarter starters this season, but nothing like the misfortune they saw Saturday night. Savannah State forced three Fort Valley State turnovers in the opening six minutes and converted each into touchdowns and never looked back in a 53-24 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory.

The Tigers (6-3/5-0 SIAC East) added a fourth score in the opening 15 minutes and took a 40-3 advantage to intermission. The Wildcats (6-3/4-1 SIAC East) won the second half by a 21-13 margin off three touchdown passes, but the deficit was too much to recover.

The FVSU loss snapped the program's longest win streak of six games in over a dozen years. The Wildcats, though, continue to have hopes of an SIAC crown as the Eastern Division title will be on the line next weekend (Nov. 9) against the Golden Rams of Albany State (6-3/4-1 SIAC East) in the 30th Annual Fountain City Classic in Columbus, Ga., in a 2 p.m. kick-off.

The potent Savannah State rushing attack amassed 375 yards on the ground on 57 attempts and 450 yards of total offense. The top SIAC passing attack, FVSU threw for 292 yards and fell short of 300 yards of total offense at 295.

In his first start of the season, Demontay Jones completed 20 of 37 passes for 292 yards and three scores to two interceptions. Shemar Bridges pulled in seven of those pass attempts for 129 yards. QA Walker (3 for 33), Jeffery Mack (2 for 35) and AJ Shipman (1 for 36) had the touchdown catches of 26, 10 and 36 yards.

Defensively, Antonio Golden led the Wildcats with seven stops, 4.5 tackles for loss and forced a fumble. Majeste Hansberry joined Golden with seven tackles and 1.5 stops for loss.

Trailing 40-3 out of halftime, FVSU scored on its second possession when Jones hit Walker falling in the back endzone line. The Wildcats saw the Tigers answer with two more scores, before the visitors made the final more respectable with a pair of final scoring passes.
