Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Chris Myers

FVSU Women's Basketball Has Enough, Takes Lane

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – In a game they led the whole afternoon, the Wildcats had to claw its way in the final seven minutes. Ce'Asia Johnson's baseline jumper with just over five minutes put Fort Valley State ahead for good over Lane College on the way to the 58-55 Saturday afternoon women's basketball victory.

The visiting Dragons (0-3/0-1 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference West) edged ahead for the second time in less than three minutes by a point, 50-49, with 6:47 left. Jada Sleet drove the left side before she passed to Johnson, who buried a 12-foot baseline jumper, to give the Wildcats (4-4/1-0 SIAC East) a lead it would not give up, 51-50. Leading still by a single point, Sleet made her own acrobatic running jumper in the lane with 18 seconds to seal the victory, 58-55.

With all her points in the first half, Nikki Culbreath led the FVSU point scorers with 10 points, including a pair of treys, and four assists. Nola Carter added eight points and seven boards.

Freshman Taziha Fanning hauled down a season-best 15 rebounds to go with seven points and three blocked shots. Torri Myers and Alicia Franklin chipped in seven points apiece.

Ra'Keta Shelton led all scorers with 19 points for Lane College.

Following the Dragons taking their third one-point lead of the opening quarter, the Wildcats went on a 12-0 run with Culbreath providing five points and two assists for a 24-13 lead at 28 seconds. The home lead grew to as many as 12 points, 29-17, with 7:37 in the half when Jah'ne Brown downed a right-wing triple.

Lane College worked its deficit down to two points, 43-41, late in the third frame, before it took the first lead of the second half, 48-47, with 8:25 left in the game.

FVSU remains at home where it welcomes Central State on Wednesday night, Dec. 4, for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
