Wildcats Use Late First-Quarter Run, Control Marauders for Third-Straight Win

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – For the first time in three years, the Wildcats placed a 'W' in the win column for the third-straight contest. Fort Valley State used a late first-quarter 15-2 run and controlled the women's basketball game from there in a 68-55 victory over Central State Wednesday night.

Trailing 11-6 midway through the opening frame, Nola Carter sank a 3-pointer and added a layup to start the Wildcats (5-4/2-0 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East) 15-2 run for a 21-13 lead at the end of the period. Torri Myers and Taziha Fanning each tallied three points back-to-back to turn the FVSU advantage to double digits, 31-18, Central State (2-7/0-2 SIAC West) was unable to get the difference under 10 points the entire second half of play.

FVSU has now won three games in a row for the first time since the program recorded the feat two times in the 2016-17 season three seasons ago.

The Wildcats saw a trio of players reach double figures led by senior Alicia Franklin's 17 point on 5-of-8 shooting, including three treys in four tries. Carter added 14 points on 6-of-11 shot attempts to go with eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Fanning and Myers combined inside for 22 points and 20 rebounds. Fanning reached double digits for her first time of her freshman year with 13 points and grabbed eight boards. Myers pulled down 12 rebounds of her own and nine tallies.

Brooke Spaulding paced Central State with 16 points.

FVSU welcomes Auburn-Montgomery to the HPE Arena this Saturday, Dec. 7, in a 1 p.m. contest.
