Wildcats Start Strong, but Trojans Take Women’s Basketball Exhibition

11/5/2019 11:11:00 PM

TROY, Ala. – The 2019-20 Wildcats first look on the court had some encouraging notes. Fort Valley State started strong and held tough the opening 13 minutes, but NCAA Division I Troy University raced to the intermission and took the women's basketball exhibition contest Tuesday night, 101-52.

The Wildcats held four leads in the first quarter, including the night's opening bucket, and the last one of 12-10 with 40 seconds left. Trailing 21-19 off an Alexia Green inside basket, FVSU saw Troy come alive for a 27-8 final 7:07 of the first half and never look back.

FVSU finished with a higher shooting percentage (33% -- 20 of 60 field goals) and tied with six 3-pointers made. Troy, though, connected on 41 of 53 free throws and held a 54-7 points off turnovers advantage.

Newcomer Nikki Culbreth paced the Wildcats with 11 points, including three treys, while Jah'ne Brown chipped in 10 points and two 3-pointers of her own. Taz Fanning added six points and six rebounds and Nola Carter had seven points.

Japonica James of Troy led all scorers with 28 points with 14 of 21 at the charity stripe.

FVSU begins its regular season on Friday evening, Nov. 8, in a 5 p.m. contest at Valdosta State.
