Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Blazers Second-Half Run Ends Wildcats Comeback Attempt

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Just as the momentum swung to the Wildcats, it was flew to the Blazers favor. Fort Valley State pulled within striking distance in the late third quarter only to see Valdosta State run of a 28-5 run in the next nine minutes and eventual 85-54 women's basketball season-opening victory.

Nola Carter found a cutting Nyah Dismukes in the lane for what would be conventional 3-point play and pulled FVSU (0-1) to within a 46-38 margin at 2:51 in the third frame. The Blazers (1-0) downed a pair of treys for the final 10 points of the third quarter and 18 of the first 23 points of the final quarter for a 74-43 cushion with five minutes left.

Sophomore Torri Myers paced the Wildcats with 13 points on 5 of 10 shooting to go with three steals off the visitors' bench. Nola Carter had a solid all-around game with 12 points on 6 of 13 shooting, while she added four rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Alicia Franklin chipped in seven points and four steals. Dismukes added seven points and Nikki Culbreth hit for six points.

Cheray Saunders led all scorers with 28 points for the home Blazers.

The Wildcats struggled to find their outside touch as a third-quarter Franklin triple was the lone 3-pointer made of 20 attempts. Valdosta State netted 31 points off 22 FVSU turnovers and outrebounded the visiting team, 47-38.

FVSU did lead three times early in the game. A Carter putback, a Dismukes free throw and an Alexia Green putback gave the Wildcats a 2-1, 3-2 and 5-4 advantages in the opening 4:23. Taz Fanning recorded the fourth FVSU putback of the first quarter to make it 10-9 Valdosta State, which turned out to the best closest margin over the final 31:04.
