Wildcats Execute Down Stretch, Give Coach Williams First Win

VALDOSTA, Ga. – New Wildcats head coach Andrea Williams hit the win column in her first weekend at the helm. Williams' Fort Valley State women's basketball team executed down the stretch and posted a 59-48 victory over West Florida Saturday evening.

The Wildcats (1-1) jumped out in the lead right away with the contest's first nine points and 13 of the opening 14 tallies. FVSU led by as many as 17 points, 27-10, in the first half. The Argonauts (1-1) raced out of the intermission with an 11-0 run to pull to within two points, 31-29, but it was the Wildcats night. FVSU answered with its own 11-0 spurt and never led by less than 10 points over the final 13:41.

"They played well and executed down the stretch," pointed out Williams. "(It was a) great team win! (I am) excited for them!"

Freshman Nikki Culbreth posted top Wildcats scoring honors with 12 points on 4 of 7 shooting with a trey, three rebounds and two steals. Nola Carter added 11 points on 5 for 10 from the floor and two steals.

Behind two key 3-pointers in the 11-0 answer run, Alicia Franklin chipped in nine points and six rebounds. Torri Myers had a pair of 3-pointers of her own as part of her own 9-point night to go with two blocked shots. Taz Fanning pulled down 11 boards and had six rebounds.

FVSU held the West Florida offense to under 24-percent in the game (13 of 55).

The Wildcats have the next two days off before they open the home schedule in a Tuesday night, Nov. 12, contest against a third Gulf South Conference team in West Georgia at 5:30 p.m.
