Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Golden Tigers Hold off Wildcats for Tight Win

TUSKEGEE, Ala. – After a strong start, the Wildcats just could not recapture the lead. Fort Valley State pulled to within a single point two in the final three minutes, but Tuskegee held on for the 63-58 women's basketball win Monday night.

The Wildcats (5-6/2-1 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East) saw their seniors Nola Carter and Alicia Franklin net the game's opening seven points in the first 1:46. FVSU held two other seven-point leads in the opening frame before a Taziha Franning layup gave what would be their final lead, 18-13, with 2:18 remaining. Tuskegee (7-4/2-0 SIAC West) finished the first on a 9-2 spurt and turned it into a 19-4 overall run with 10 of the first 12 tallies of the second quarter and never gave up the lead over the remaining 30:01.

Franklin pumped in a season-high 20 points, including three treys, to lead the visitors' scoring. Carter added 15 points, nine rebounds, five assists, two steals and a blocked shot.

Fanning and Myers recorded similar nights with eight points and six boards and seven points and eight caroms. Jah'ne Brown chipped in eight rebounds and four points.

India Blakely's double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds topped Tuskegee's effort.

The Golden Tigers held a 36-30 intermission advantage, but the Wildcats won the third quarter, 14-9, for a one-point, 45-44, difference heading to the final 10 minutes.

Franklin once and Myers two times helped FVSU put the deficit back to a point with the last being 57-56 with 1:51 to go. Tuskegee made 2 of 4 free throws and a layup for the game-deciding difference and five-point lead, 61-56, with 47 seconds.

FVSU returns home for the first of two home games to finish the December slate with a 5:30 p.m. contest Thursday night, Dec. 19, against LeMoyne-Owen College.
