Wildcats Push SIAC Leader Tigers, Fall Short in Final Minutes

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Wildcats showed again, they can play with the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's best. Fort Valley State pushed the league-leader Benedict College all evening, but a home game-deciding run in the early fourth-quarter minutes decided an 84-67 women's basketball final.

In a very similar game as the first meeting in Fort Valley on Jan. 28, the Wildcats (5-18/5-10 SIAC) led in each of the first three frames, including by five points, 38-33, at 6:44 showing in the third. After a FVSU 3-pointer by Alicia Franklin to pull her team within three points, Benedict (18-5/13-0 SIAC) netted the next eight consecutive tallies, including forcing three visitor turnovers to make it 64-53 with 7:28 remaining. FVSU was only able to get to within eight points in the final seven minutes.

Nola Carter paced the Wildcats with a double-double of 22 points on 9 of 17 shooting to go with 11 rebounds. Franklin downed five treys for 17 points to go with five rebounds, three assists and four steals.

For the second game in a row,
Jah'ne Brown reached double digits with 11 points, while Torri Myers had seven points and four rebounds. Kaylan West added a 6 for 6 night from the foul line for six points.

Ay'Anna Bey led all scorers with 25 points for the Tigers.

Carter gave FVSU an 8-5 lead midway through the first quarter, before a 12-0 Benedict spurt and eventual 18-14 score at the end.

A Brown trey and
layup with a Myers tripled between gave the Wildcats a 22-19 advantage with 7:12 in the second period. The Tigers, though, answered with an 11-0 run and 32-24 lead. FVSU rallied for the final eight first-half points for a 32-32 intermission deadlock.

FVSU enjoyed the advantage
for the first half of the third period. Nyah Dismukes dropped a jump shot for what would be the Wildcats largest second-half lead of 38-33, before Carter banked home a layup and a 42-38 score 4:11. Benedict ran off the next eight points and took a 54-50 edge for the final 10 minutes.

FVSU heads on the road for the final time in the regular season on Saturday night, Feb. 16, for a 6 p.m.
