FVSU Battles Back, Tuskegee Has Just Enough in SIAC First Round

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Head coach Mark Sherrill's foundation first season came to a close on Monday afternoon. Fort Valley State battled back to within two points in the second half, but it could not grasp the lead as Tuskegee held on for the 74-60 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Men's Basketball First Round win.

Trailing by a 26-16 halftime margin, the Wildcats (7-22) ran out of the intermission with the opening eight points behind three Shawn Foxbrennen buckets and a Thomas Hardy
for a 36-34 tally at 16:29. FVSU kept the contest close on another Hardy inside , 46-42, at 10:48. The Golden Tigers (13-14) netted the following seven points and did not allow another Wildcats challenge in the final 10 minutes.

"We got off to a good start as the defense made some stops. But, we could not convert enough and we needed more defensive stops in the second half," said Sherrill.

downed 9 of 13 from the floor and both of his 3-point attempts for 22 points to go with eight rebounds and a pair of assists to lead FVSU. Senior Jaylon McMillan was the lone other double figure scorer at 15 points, including three final triples. Brenton Jordan added eight points and nine boards.

"Getting to campus in September, I knew it would take some time to figure out and make it a season to build upon. It's been a season of
. We played a lot of guys who were walk ons. If we had more guys with experience, who would go with a phenomenal shooter (McMillan) and a phenomenal player (Foxbrennen), those two would be All-American and All-Conference players," stressed Sherrill.

The Wildcat coach continued, "We gave 10 games away this year. Overall, I am not pleased with the season, but I feel we are closer than we appeared to be."

Gregg Boyd led Tuskegee with 19 points off the bench, while Kaleb Morton had 13.

FVSU enjoyed its first lead 8:44 into the afternoon on a McMillan trey for a 10-9 score. Three
later, Jordan converted the second of two free throws for what would be the Wildcats final lead, 22-21, at 4:29. Tuskegee finished the final four first-half minutes by outscoring its opponent, 16-5, for the 36-26 halftime total.

NOTE: McMillan wrapped up his career with 1,212 points, a day after being named to the All-SIAC Second team, despite leading the league in points scored and 3-pointers and third in scoring.
