Brown’s Late Offensive Explosion Not Enough, Lions Hold On for Win

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Wildcats saw a new scorer almost single-handedly willed the team back Saturday afternoon. Jah'ne Brown pumped in 11 fourth-quarter points, but it was not quite enough as host Paine College held on for the 62-54 win over the Fort Valley State women's basketball team.

Trailing by 14 points with 4:58 left in the game, Brown downed three of her four treys in 1:23 to pull the Wildcats (5-17/5-9 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) to 56-51 at 3:16. The FVSU freshman added a
layup and made it 57-53 at 2:25. The Lions (2-19/2-11 SIAC) made a foul shot and one layup, while Brown saw two more 3-point attempts just fall off the rim in the final moments to end the visitors' comeback.

Brown made 8 of 15 from the floor and 4 of 9 treys for her season-best 24 points, her first double figure point total after she netted seven in two prior games. Nola Carter added eight points and five rebounds as
FVSU's other top scorer.

Paine saw Keondra Archie be the star of the day with a double-double of 22 points and 16 rebounds.

Trailing 2-0 in the opening moments, Alexia Green, Jaylin Moye and Nyah Dismukes all put one bucket in for a 6-2 FVSU lead at 7:50.  Green dropped in a second basket for what would be the final Wildcats lead of the day, 8-7, at 5:22 in the first period.

Paine took an 18-13 lead
into the second quarter and led by as many as 10 points, 34-24. The Lions continued their success in the third quarter and they enjoyed the largest margin, 51-31, with 2:46 remaining.

FVSU will have only a day to prepare for the SIAC's top team, Benedict College, in a Monday night, Feb. 11, road contest. Tip is set for 6 p.m.
