Seven-Run Outburst Propels Wildcats to Split with Wolves

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – One big inning resulted in a loss and a second one made the Wildcats a winner on Monday. Fort Valley State saw its two-run lead in the seventh inning evaporate into a 7-3 opening loss to Wesleyan College, before a seven-run fifth propelled it to an 8-6 late game victory.

The visiting Wolves (9-25) had been held to four hits and one run in their first six at bats, before they scored six times off seven hits to edge ahead 7-3. The Wildcats managed one hit in the home seventh to complete the opener.

Geter makes the tag at home in a key 2nd-game defensive play.
Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth, FVSU (14-22) saw Shakerra Geter, Jahara Buggs and Keteria Loney get down looping singles each to load the bases to start the at bat. Janelle Cockerham drove in the first home run on a fielder's choice and Ladayshia Williams had RBI hit-by-a pitch, before a two-run Tyanna Askew single up the middle gave FVSU a 5-4 lead. A two-run Ashley Simmons-Blair double to center capped the Wildcats at bat and they held on for the nightcap victory.

Simmons-Blair and Buggs both lined four hits in the twinbill in eight at bats. Geter, Loney and Sara Lann chipped in three singles each, while Askew was 3-for-3 with a run and two RBI in game two.
Williams accomplished an unusual by being hit by a pitch twice in each game for four total.

Cockerham picked up her third pitching win of the year and Kayla Brown, who also had a two-run double in the opener, saved the game.
