FVSU Voted Fourth in SIAC East Football Preseason Poll, Four Wildcats on All-SIAC Preseason Teams

7/9/2019 9:26:00 AM

ATLANTA, Ga. – As the countdown hits 60 days until the season opener, Fort Valley State was voted fourth in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference 2019 Football Preseason Eastern Division poll announced on Tuesday morning. The Wildcats also placed four members on the Preseason All-SIAC Teams.

After slipping to fourth place last fall following back-to-back SIAC Eastern top finishes, head coach Kevin Porter aims to move up from his team's predicted finish. Defending Eastern champ Albany State received three of the six first-place votes and it was followed by Benedict College and Morehouse College in second and third. Behind FVSU, Clark Atlanta and Savannah State rounded out the Division prediction.

The 2018 SIAC champion Miles College edged out Tuskegee for the top spot in the Western Division, while both had two first-place votes. Central State had the most top vote with three, while it was slated in third, while Lane and Kentucky State were fourth and fifth.

On the All-SIAC First Team, junior offensive lineman Darrius Hicks (Camilla, Ga.) moved up from the 2018 Second Team as the Wildcats' offensive anchor. The junior is joined by junior punt returner Lorenzo Smothers (Arabia, Ga.) and senior defensive back Cameron Young (Eastman, Ga.).

Smothers led FVSU with 149.4 all-purpose yards per game, including 43 receptions for 727 yard and four scores. A First Team selection, Young topped the Wildcats defense with 85 tackles, 54 solo and 2.5 tackles for loss.

FVSU garnered a fourth Preseason All-SIAC honoree in Zach Anderson. The junior defensive back completed last season as the second-leading tackler with 64 stops in 10 games to go with five tackles for loss, two interceptions and a pair of pass breakups.

Morehouse College running back Santo Dunn was voted to repeat as the SIAC Offensive Player of the Year. He led the league in rushing (875 yards) and scoring (8.4 points per game). Linebacker Austin Stephens of Miles College was the 2018 Defensive Player of the Year and begins with the same expectations for this fall.

FVSU opens its 2019 campaign at Wildcat Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 7, against Miles College. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m.
