Rattlers Take Advantage of Wildcats First-Half Turnovers in Gridiron Win

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In what started promising early in the Saturday night matchup, it turned sour for the Wildcats in the final first-quarter minutes. Florida A&M took advantage of three Fort Valley State turnovers and scored three times in the matter of seven minutes on the way to a 57-20 football win.

Demontay Jones passed for a pair of Wildcats (0-2) touchdowns, one each to A.J. Shipman and Joseph Ross, from 26 and four yards for their points. With 55 seconds left in the game, Delvin Webb scooped up a Rattlers fumble and streaked down the left sideline 48 yards for the final Wildcats points of the night.

The Rattlers (1-1) scored for the first time with a two-yard touchdown run with 1:53 left in the first quarter. FAMU went on for four more touchdowns, a field goal and a blocked punt safety in the second 15 minutes for the 40-0 halftime margin.

FVSU did outscore host FAMU, 20-17, in the second 60 minutes of action.

Jones led the FVSU second-half offense where he went 11 of 16 for 139 and two scores. QA Walker pulled in five passes for 22 yards, while Adrian Adams had three receptions for 45 yards. Shipman finished with 37 yards over three catches and Jeffery Mack 41 yards on two catches.

Defensively, Majeste Hansberry led the Wildcats for the second time in as many weeks with seven tackles and one for loss. Zach Anderson and Aaron Dore added 6.5 tackles apiece. Nathaniel Freeney pulled in his first career interception and returned it 17 yards to set up the second Wildcats touchdown to go with 2.5 tackles.

FVSU returns home to Wildcat Stadium next Saturday, Sept. 21, in a 1 p.m. contest against Shorter University.
