Wildcats Aim for Winning Combo Versus Hawks

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – With games against the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference defending champions and a move up for a week with a FCS opponent, the Wildcats return home in hopes of a successful ending. Fort Valley State aims for a winning combination versus the Shorter University Hawks on an early 'Senior Day' at Wildcat Stadium.
 
The Wildcats (0-2) and Hawks (0-2) will both be looking for their first 2019 season victories. The Saturday FVSU 'Family Day' kick-off is set for 1 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.

Game Summary: The Hawks posted a 0-11 campaign in 2018, but the record is deceiving. Shorter lost four games to nationally-ranked teams and five overall NCAA DII playoff teams. A final loss came to FCS Samford in the season opener. The lone common opponent was both FVSU and Shorter lost to 2018 National Champion Valdosta State.

Wildcats Defense
  • Allowed 49.5 points per game in first two weeks & 471.5 yards of total offense
  • DL Nathaniel Freeney pulled in a deflected pass for team's first interception
  • DB Delvin Webb scooped up a fumble & rambled 48 yards for the team's 3rd TD of the game last Saturday
  • Unit has 13 tackles for loss in two games
  • LB Majeste Hansberry has led in tackles both games with 9 TT at FAMU and 24 for two games
  • LB Aaron Dore is second in stops with 16
 
Hawks Offense
  • Average 12.0 points per game & 238.5 yards of total offense per contest
  • QB Tyler Pullum hit WR Andrew Warren from 46 yds with 13:05 in 2Q to tie game, 14-14, last week vs. West Florida. Hawks, though, were shutout in the second half
  • Pullum passed for 172 yds on 16 of 26 attempts and is 29 of 46 for 256 yds with 1 TD in 2 weeks
  • RB Tupac Lanier leads ground game with 17 carries for 88 yards
  • WR Christian Da-Silva has 8 rec. for 98 yds & Warren has 4 grabs for 74 yds
 
SPECIAL TEAMS
Wildcats
  • Team looks to improve on punt line with a punt attempt blocked in each week
  • K/P Eli Mashburn has 11 punts for a 37.3 average with 3 inside the 20 & long of 48 yds
  • Mashburn has made his only field goal attempt of 45 yards and is 4 of 5 on extra points
 
Hawks
  • P Brett Bardenwerper holds a 39.3 punt average over 11 boots with 2 inside the 20 and 1 over 50 yards
  • K Nicholas Pope is 1 of 2 on field goal attempts with the make being 36 yards
