Wildcats Outlast Dragons in Five Sets

ALBANY, Ga. – In their most exciting match of the weekend to this point, the Wildcats had enough for the victory. The Fort Valley State volleyball frontline tandem of Nia Bell and India King pounded back-to-back kills to finish the fifth-set and helped their team outlast Lane College, 3-2, in the second day of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Crossover event.

In the deciding fifth set, Lane College led 9-8 before FVSU (3-7/2-6 SIAC East) rallied for a 12-9 advantage with four consecutive tallies. The Wildcats led 13-10, but the Dragons tied the set at 13, before Bell blazed the go-ahead and King the cross court winner for the victory. After dropping set one (14-26), FVSU won the middle set (25-23 and 25-16), before Lane forced the fifth set with a 25-22 fourth-set final.

FVSU started and ended its day not as successful with a 3-0 (11-25, 10-25, 18-25) loss to Kentucky State and a final 3-0 (20-25, 20-25, 18-25) defeat to Central State, which started only 30 minutes after the long five-set win.

Against Lane, Bell paced the Wildcats with 18 kills, 17 digs, a block and an ace. King downed 11 kills and was part of five blocks. Jaelyn Franklin added seven kills, 14 digs, three blocks, two assists and an ace. Ashaunti Brown hit seven kills of her own to go with four total blocks, while Ceirra Wright had six kills and three blocks.

Rita Davis handed out 34 assists and lined three aces. Ashley Simmons-Blair dug 24 attacks.

FVSU completes the SIAC Crossover with a final Saturday morning, Sept. 28, match against Lemoyne-Owen at 10 a.m.
