Wildcats Soundly Defeat Tigers, 50-16

GREENVILLE, S.C. – After coming up short on the scoreboard in the first quarter, the Wildcats' engine went full steam ahead in the second 15 minutes. Fort Valley State scored 29 second-quarter points behind four Slade Jarman scoring strikes while the defense posted seven sacks on the way to a 50-16 victory over Benedict College in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football opener at the Upstate HBCU Classic.

FVSU (2-2/1-0 SIAC East) posted the 50-plus points for the first time in almost two years since it defeated Morehouse College, 52-7, on Oct. 28 of the 2017 season. Benedict suffered its fourth loss in as many games and dropped to 0-2 in the SIAC East.

After the Wildcats came up short on a pair of first-quarter field goal attempts, Jarman found Joseph Ross on back-to-back drives with touchdown passes of 37 and 14 yard for a 13-3 lead. Following a long Benedict scoring run, FVSU's Aaron Dore returned the block point after attempt for two defensive points, before two more Jarman scoring passes – 29 yards to Jeffery Mack and 37 yards to Ross – for a 29-9 intermission advantage.

The Wildcats offense outgained the Tigers by the wide margin of 532 to 275 yards on 15 more plays from scrimmage. The FVSU defense forced 11 Benedict punts, a season-high seven sacks and four fumbles.

After a tough 4 for 13 first quarter for 22 yards, Jarman found his grove and so did the FVSU offense. The senior went 21 of 30 covering 369 yards and 6 touchdowns over the next two-and-a-half quarters. On the night, the Wildcats quarterback was 25 of 43 for 391 yards and 6 touchdowns. He also ran eight times for 19 yards.

Ross recorded his big outing with five grabs for 106 yards and three scores of 37, 14 and 37 yards. QA Walker also had five catches for 51 yards. Shemar Bridges pulled in the longest scoring catch of 63 yards of his four receptions for 87 yards. Shipman and Mack posted similar nights of four catches for 55 and 50 yards and one TD. Malik Route rounded out the touchdown-grabbing receivers with a 1-yard to end the night and three catches for 42 yards.

Jahseari Patterson led a ball-hungry defense as he recorded 3.5 tackles for loss of 22 yards, two sacks, forced a fumble, two quarterback hurries and a team-high seven tackles. The other defensive end, Demetrius Harris, had his own 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack, one forced fumble and six stops. The FVSU defense totaled 13 tackles for loss of 69 yards.

With 6:52 left in the third quarter, Benedict did cut the margin to 13 points, 29-16, on a 33-yard scoring pass. The Wildcats answered back six minutes later with the Jarman long scoring pass over the middle on a cutting Bridges for 63 yards. The quarterback iced the game and made it an even six touchdowns to open the fourth frame on a hard pass between three defenders to Shipman, who alluded the defenders to the end zone from 30 yards.

FVSU will try to make it three wins in a road on night game next Saturday night, Oct. 5. The Wildcats play at the Panthers of Florida Tech in a 7 p.m. kick-off in Melbourne, Fla.
