Savannah State Uses First-Half Push and Holds off FVSU Late

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats successful run hit a bump in the road on Saturday afternoon. Savannah State charged into the half with a double-digit lead and held off a late Fort Valley State surge, 78-65, in women's basketball.
 
After a Taziha Fanning layup with 3:48 in the second quarter for FVSU (8-9/4-4 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East), Savannah State (8-4/3-4 SIAC East) ran off the next 12 points and took a 45-33 lead into the half. The Wildcats cut the margin down to six points, 70-64, on a Jah'ne Brown trey with 1:59 remaining in the game, but two back-to-back Tigers buckets followed to end the home surge.
 
Fanning helped FVSU control the boards with 20 rebounds, 10 on offense, to go with 18 points on 7-for-10 shooting. Torri Myers added 11 points, all in the first half, and five rebounds. Nola Carter rounded out the top home performers with nine points, eight caroms and six assists.
 
Le'Andra Gillis dropped five 3-pointers as part of her game-best 27-point effort for Savannah State.
 
FVSU held its largest lead of five points, 13-8, with 3:21 left in the first quarter as a pair of Jada Sleet free throws capped a six consecutive points. Savanah State, though, netted 10 of the final 12 points of the frame and would never trail in the final 31:40.
 
FVSU heads back on the road where it will play at Spring Hill College on Wednesday night, Jan. 22, in a 6:30 EST start.
