Wildcats Clip Thorobreds at Finish

FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Wildcats started 2020 with a 'W' in its record. Fort Valley State scored the game's final four points from the foul line in last 37 seconds and clipped host Kentucky State, 55-52, on the Saturday afternoon women's basketball court.

The Wildcats (6-8/3-3 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East) ran off six points in a row capped by an offensive putback by Nola Carter for a 49-42 lead with 3:00 minutes left in the game. The Thorobreds (4-8/1-4 SIAC West) answered with a 10-2 run over the next 2:08 for a 52-51 lead. Carter pushed FVSU back in front with a pair of foul shots with 37 seconds, before Alicia Franklin added her own pair at 16 seconds following a home turnover for the 55-52 final score. The Thorobreds' game-tying 3-point attempt at the end was not good.

Carter started off the New Year where she left off 2019 with a 20-plus point effort with 22 points on 9-for-17 from the floor along with hitting both her 3-point and free throw tries. The senior also had six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Torri Myers chipped in eight points on 3-of-6 attempts and four rebounds. Franklin and Jah'ne Brown had five points.

Victoria Blankenship posted a double-double for Kentucky State of 26 points and 14 rebounds.

FVSU led the entire first half with 16-7 and 24-21 leads at the end of the opening and second frames. The Wildcats did not trail until 2:32 into the third quarter when the Thorobreds scored the first four points for a 25-24 lead. The visitors came back and carried a 37-36 margin to the final 10 minutes.

Kentucky State won the battle on the boards, 45-33, but FVSU forced 10 more turnovers on the home team, 25-15.

FVSU comes home for a Wednesday night, Jan. 8, non-conference game against Carver College. Tip is set for 6 p.m.
