Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Wildcats Win Final 10 Minutes over Lions, Move Over .500

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats had the chance in the middle of January to move over .500 for the season, but they accomplished the feat Monday night. Fort Valley State scored the final points of the third quarter for the lead and never gave up the advantage in the final period to defeat the Paine College women's basketball team, 64-58.

After the Lions (7-13/6-7 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East) tied the game with 35 seconds, the Wildcats' Taziha Fanning banked home the offensive putback with two seconds for a 48-46 lead. FVSU extended the margin to as many as nine points, 58-49, on a Nola Carter layup with 4:38 to go. The home team held off a pesky Paine College squad, which cut it to two points, 58-56, with 2:34 remaining, but FVSU made its last six free throws to seal it.

With the win, FVSU moves over the .500 mark overall at 12-11 for the first time in six seasons. The Wildcats also improve to 8-6 in the SIAC East.

Carter connected on all eight of her field goals, including a pair of treys, for a game-best 22-point night, while she pulled down seven rebounds, handed out four assists and swiped three passes. Jada Sleet paced the backcourt with 15 tallies and two assists.

Inside, Fanning recorded a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds. Torri Myers grabbed 11 boards of her own to go with six points and two blocked shots.

Kezia Holmes led the Lions with 14 points.

Paine College held a lead of as many as six points twice, 11-5 and 13-7, in the opening six minutes. FVSU came back from its slow start for what would be the game's biggest lead of the night of 10 points, 28-18 and 30-20.

FVSU finishes its week with the Homecoming Saturday night contest against rival Albany State. Tip is set for 6 p.m.
