Wildcats Grind Out Victory to Sweep Golden Rams

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats Homecoming game was not pretty, but they liked the end result. Fort Valley State ground out a women's basketball victory, 48-38, over Albany State and swept the season series for the first time in over a dozen years.

Trailing 8-6 with 3:49 to go in the first quarter, FVSU ran off a 10-2 spurt to end the period for a 16-10 lead and never lost it the rest of the contest. The Wildcats extended it to 13 points by intermission, 27-14, and took a 36-16 advantage into the final 10 minutes. The Golden Rams forced some late turnovers to cut a 21-point margin down to the final 10-point difference.

With the victory, the Wildcats (13-11) tie their most wins in a season in seven years (2013-14 at 13-15). FVSU also stays in second place in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East at 9-6. ASU goes to 4-18 and 2-12 in the SIAC East.

Jada Sleet led the winning home effort with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Taziha Fanning owned the glass with 19 boards to go with nine points and three blocks. Guards Nikki Culbreath and Jah'ne Brown added eight points apiece and Alexia Green grabbed eight rebounds.

Alexandria James netted half of the Golden Rams points with 19.

FVSU dominated in rebounds by a 62-37 margin and held ASU to 18-percent shooting until the final moments of the game.

FVSU now has off until it plays at Savannah State next Saturday, Feb. 22, in a 1 p.m. contest.
