Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Savannah State Early Run Holds Off FVSU Women’s Basketball

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Wildcats saw their third three-game win streak fall short of pushing it to four on Saturday. Host Savannah State used a big middle-of-the-first quarter run and held off Fort Valley State women's basketball, 83-67.

After Ce'Asia Johnson netted the game's opening five points in the first 43 seconds for the Wildcats (13-12/9-7 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East), the Tigers (15-7/10-7 SIAC East) had their way for the next nearly six minutes to a tune of a 19-0 long run. Savannah State rode the 5:48 run the rest of the contest and held off a fourth-stanza FVSU push.

Jada Sleet posted the Wildcats game high with 12 points and three assists. Torri Myers added 11 points and eight boards. Nola Carter returned to the lineup with nine points, nine rebounds and six assists, while Taziha Fannin contributed nine tallies and six caroms. Alexia Green swatted a career-best five shots and pulled down nine rebounds.

For Savannah State, Azhana Maxwell led five players in double figures with 21 points.

Trailing 59-38 after three periods, the Wildcats cut the margin down to 14 points, 67-53, on two Sleet free throws with 5:23 left. The Tigers, though, did not allow the visitors to push any harder than a 13-point difference.

FVSU wraps up its regular season with Senior Night on Tuesday evening, Feb. 25, against Clark Atlanta starting at 5:30 p.m.
