Wildcats Battle Hard Against Powerhouse Hurricanes

AMERICUS, Ga. – The Wildcats took on arguably their toughest foe on the regular season schedule. Fort Valley State held with Georgia Southwestern, but two big innings were the difference in a 13-1 and 13-0 five-inning softball doubleheader.

After allowing one, two and three runs in the Hurricanes (6-2) first three at bats, the Wildcats (3-3) were able to get on the scoreboard. Shakerra Geter led off with a single, but failed to reach second on Jahara Buggs fielder's choice. Buggs went to second on a passed ball and third on a Keteria Loney ground out, before she ran home on a wild pitch for a 6-1 score. Ga. Southwestern answered with a seven-run fourth frame.

In the top of the second of the late contest trailing only 1-0, Buggs was hit by a pitch, stole second and moved to third on a ground out. The sophomore Wildcat would be stranded with her teammates making outs the next two hitters. For the second time, the Hurricanes posted a big number with nine runs to pull away from the visitors.

Geter and Loney lined a single apiece for FVSU's only two hits.

FVSU returns home for a three-team, two-day tournament on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14-15, with games against Montreat College (11 a.m.) and Edwards Waters College (3 p.m.) each day.
