Wildcats Comeback Falls Short Against Cavaliers

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats offense could not get going Friday afternoon. After taking an early edge, Fort Valley State's late-inning comeback fell short against Montreat College, 5-3, on the softball diamond.

Falling behind due to the Cavaliers' (1-4) five-run third, the Wildcats (3-4) took advantage of a visitors' error and a Shakerra Geter sac fly made it 5-2 after five frames. FVSU pulled a run closer in the sixth on Keteria Loney, who had a lead-off single, scampered home for a 5-3 margin, but the home team was unable to get closer.

Loney accounted for two of the team's four hits along with scoring the final run. Kayla Phillips and Tyanna Askew lined the other two singles.

Trailing 1-0, Montreat took the lead on a two-run triple on a FVSU outfield misplayed fly ball. The Cavaliers went on to add three more scores in the six-hit at bat.

FVSU stays home for day two of the three-team, two-day tournament on Saturday, Feb. 15, with another game against Montreat College (11 a.m.) and a single game versus Edwards Waters College (3 p.m.).
