Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Wildcats Play Tough, But Tigers Prevail

COLUMBIA, S.C. – In the first of two-straight games against each other, the Wildcats came away with some positives. Fort Valley State played tough, but the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference top team Benedict College prevailed, 74-59, in women's hoops.

The Wildcats (10-10/6-5 SIAC East) held an early 4-2 lead on an Alexia Green jumper 2:50 into the game and a Nikki Culbreath tied the contest at 9-9 with 4:07 gone, but the Tigers (20-2/11-1 SIAC East) finished the first frame on a 14-4 spurt for a 23-11 lead they would not give up. FVSU made a final fourth-quarter surge to cut the margin down to 10 points, 69-59, on two Culbreath buckets, but the visitors ran out of time to rally further.

Sophomore Jah'ne Brown guided the Wildcats attack with a trio of treys and 19 points. Torri Myers accounted for 13 points, seven rebounds and three blocks on the inside, while Culbreath finished with nine tallies and two assists.

Benedict, which has only two one-point loss on the year for their two losses, claimed the glass by a 53-35 margin. Ay'Anna Bey posted a double-double of 20 points and 11 boards.

Trailing 34-20 midway through the second quarter, the Wildcats cut the margin in half by intermission, 35-28, behind a pair of Brown triples. The Tigers, though reestablished themselves by taking the third frame, 24-13, to lead 59-41 heading to the final frame.

The two SIAC East foes will only have to wait five days for their rematch in Fort Valley on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 8, starting at 1 p.m.
