Wildcats Take Down No. 11 Tigers, Pull off Biggest Upset in Recent Years

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats made its statement win of the season. Fort Valley State edged ahead to end the first quarter and netted the final three points to take down No. 11 Benedict College, 63-60, in women's basketball.

The nationally-ranked Tigers hung around and tied the game at 60-60 with 58 seconds left in the game. It was the Wildcats day, though. FVSU's Torri Myers made both ends of two free throws with 31 seconds and the home defense produced held on the next Benedict possession, before Alicia Franklin added 1-of-2 foul shots for a 63-60 edge with five seconds. Benedict did not get a shot off in its final possession as the ball was thrown away as time ran out.

After falling on the road to the same Tigers, 74-59, last Monday (Feb. 3), the Wildcats (11-11/7-6 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East) reversed the result by 18 points for the victory. The Wildcats win snapped a 13-game losing streak to the Tigers and broke the visitors' 15-game win streak coming into the day.

Jada Sleet netted nine points in each half for a game-best 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting, including a pair of treys. The junior added seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. On the inside Torri Myers and Taziha Fanning posted quality games with 16 points and nine boards and 12 points and 12 rebounds to their credits.

FVSU also reversed the work on the glass from five days ago in the first meeting. After being outrebounded 53-35, the Wildcats won the battle, 52-47, including 22 on the offensive side.

Ayanna Armstead led Benedict with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Following the opening six points of the day, FVSU trailed 14-11, with 1:16 in the first quarter, but it would score the next nine points to make it 20-14. The new Wildcats lead lasted through half, 32-30, and until the Tigers tied the game at 60 with 31 seconds.

FVSU remains at home where it will take on Paine College on Monday night, Feb. 10, in a 5:30 p.m. contest.
