FVSU Basketball Set for Benedict on Heart Awareness Day

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – Both Wildcats hoops are ready to reverse the outcome of their last contests. Fort Valley State is set for Benedict College on Saturday afternoon on Heart Awareness Day in the HPE Arena.
 
Game Information:
Tip-off – Women at 1 p.m./Men at approximately 3:00 p.m.

FVSU made the trip to Columbia, S.C., last Monday night, Feb. 3, and it came away on the short end of both contests – women 74-59 and men 85-67. In unusual Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference scheduling, the two teams meet back in five days.
 
In support of both the Wildcats and their bringing attention to Heart Awareness Day, all fans are asked to wear red to the games.
 
Women:
No. 11 Benedict (20-2/11-1 SIAC East vs. FVSU (10-11/6-6 SIAC East)

Last Monday, the Wildcats held an early 4-2 lead and tied the contest at 9-9 four minutes into the game. The Tigers finished the opening frame on an 14-4 spurt for a 23-11 lead going into the second period. FVSU tried one last surge late in the fourth quarter, but ran out of time to comeback.
 
Sophomore Jah'ne Brown guided the Wildcats attack with a trio of treys and 19 points. Torri Myers accounted for 13 points, seven rebounds and three blocks on the inside. Benedict's Ay'Anna Bey posted a double-double of 20 points and 11 boards.
 
The Wildcats will try their first win against the Tigers in Fort Valley since Jan. 20 of 2014 by a 65-58 final covering six meetings.

On Monday, A Shawn Foxbrennen 3-pointer made it a two-possession game and a layup two minutes later pulled the Wildcats to within four points, 54-50, with 13:12 remaining. The Tigers' guards of Joseph Staton and Romello Jones, though, guided the home team to a 16-4 run with three more of their combined nine treys to end the visitors' comeback attempt.


Foxbrennen led the FVSU charge with 12 points to go with six rebounds and a pair of assists. Brenton Cliette Jordan was the other double figure scorer with 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting. 
 
Staton and Jones combined to go 9-of-21 from 3-point land for 44 points (24 and 20 points) to pace the Tigers.
 
FVSU has won the last two meetings in Fort Valley, including an 80-71 win last Jan. 28 over Benedict.
