Wildcats Sixth-Inning Runs Propels Past Golden Bears, Clinch SIAC East

JASPER, Ala. – The Wildcats posted a strong outing on the diamond, but they will unfortunately have to enjoy it for a long time. Fort Valley State scored four times in the sixth inning to secure an 8-2 softball win Thursday over Miles College at the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Crossover event.

The FVSU win was its third in a row, but just as the team's engines were revving up for SIAC play, the 2020 season was shutdown mid-afternoon. Due to the COVID-19 concerns, the SIAC, like the NCAA has with all winter and spring championships, have cancelled the rest of the spring semester competitions.

With the Thursday victory, the Wildcats (6-8) will finish the shortened SIAC schedule with a 3-1 mark in the East Division. The 3-1 league mark ties them for first place, but bring the title to The Valley on strength of victories.

FVSU led 3-0 before Miles (7-11) pushed a pair across the plate to pull within a run in the bottom of the fifth.

In the top-of-the sixth, the Wildcats sent 10 batters to the plate and saw four run-scoring singles from four different players – Destiny Fitzpatrick, Tyana Askew, Makayla Cruz and Ashley Simmons-Blair. With the quartet of scores, FVSU went ahead, 7-2, before it added an insurance run off Ladayshia Williams' bat in the seventh for the 8-2 final.

Kayla Phillips was strong in the circle and recorded her third win in a row. Phillips went the distance and allowed six hits and an earned run, while she fanned two.

Tamani Owens tripled and singled and Tyana Askew doubled twice at the plate. Williams, Destiny Fitzpatrick and Keteria Loney all doubled and singled. Phillips added her own double.

Simmons-Blair, Marlayzha Crutchfield and Cruz lined a single each in the Wildcats 14-hit attack.
