Lead Alludes Wildcats in Final Minute, Hawks Take Close Game

ROME, Ga. – The Wildcats' 2021-22 season opener was a battle the entire game. Fort Valley State saw the lead in the final minute allude it and host Shorter University hold on to take a close, 79-73, women's basketball final.

After the Wildcats (0-1) scored four of the first five fourth-quarter points to tie the game 50 seconds into the period, the Hawks (1-1) registered the next five tallies and would not trail the rest of the way. Trailing 72-65 with 3:47 left, FVSU rallied and pulled to within two, 75-73, on a Jah'ne Brown layup with 54 seconds to go. The visitors missed the tying shot with 41 seconds, before Shorter added a pair of free throws and FVSU committed a turnover and missed its final field attempt in the last 39 ticks.

Kyla McIntosh downed 5 of 7 attempts and all four of her free throws for a team-high 14 FVSU points. Torri Myers chipped in 11 points and four rebounds, while Brown had 10 points. Diamond Jones added nine points and two steal. On the inside, Faith Fantroy and Angel Williams combined for 15 points and 11 caroms.

Jasmine Gaines led all scorers as she pumped in 31 points for Shorter.

FVSU started strong with Brown having the opening bucket and it would have its largest two leads of four, 14-10 and 16-12, midway through the first quarter. A Brown layup gave the Wildcats another lead, 29-28, with 5:20 before the half, but the Hawks went on an 11-2 run and took a 43-36 advantage to the half.

Myers downed a tripled to tie the game at 56 with 1:34 in the third frame, before McIntosh's jump shot produced the final tie, 60-60, 50 seconds into the fourth period.

FVSU will now be off until traveling to Americus to take on Georgia Southwestern on Tuesday, Nov. 23, in a 5:30 p.m. contest.
