Wildcats Ride Strong Opening, Register Victory over Marauders

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats pressure made a difference early and keyed the Monday evening women's basketball success. Fort Valley State rode a strong opening and registered its first victory of the season, 72-61, over Central State.
 
FVSU (1-3/1-1 SIAC East) scored the first five points and turned the start into a 17-5 margin on a Nikki Culbreath triple 7:56 into the night. The Wildcats increased the difference to 15 points early in the second quarter, before the Marauders (1-4/0-2 SIAC West) made a run in the third period to cut the margin to five points. FVSU, though, worked the advantage back to as high as 17 points and never saw it under 10 points in the final 12 minutes.
 
Torri Myers netted a game-best 19 points to go with 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Ja'Meshia Williams drained four first-half 3-pointers and posted her best point total of 15 to date. Culbreath added 10 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals. Angel Williams rounded out the double figure scorers with 10 points and four boards.
 
FVSU outrebounded Central State, 50-41, and forced 37 visiting turnovers.
 
Diamond Phillips led Central State with 11 points and three steals.
 
FVSU stays at home for a Thursday night, Dec. 1, contest against Miles College. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
