Miles Edges FVSU in Tough Women’s Basketball Overtime Finish

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats had an answer the entire second half, but a final one in the extra period was not to be found. After leading the for all but four minutes of regulation, Fort Valley State was unable to carry it over into overtime where Miles College edged out a women's basketball win, 80-78.
 
The Wildcats' Kyndall Thomas top-of-the key jumper tied the contest for a third time in overtime, 78-78, with 53 seconds. Following a steal on the defensive end, the Bears (5-0) fired the ball down court and converted on a layup with 8.5 seconds left for an 80-78 lead. After a home timeout with 7.3 seconds, Nikki Culbreath's driving layup went off the rim and gave Miles the come-from-behind win.
 
Torri Myers connected on 11 of 23 field goals for a FVSU (1-4) high of 28 points to go with 14 rebounds, four steals, two blocks and two assists. Jah'ne Brown also registered a double-double of 15 points on 7 of 12 shooting and 11 boards. Culbreath rounded out the top home scorers with 13 points along with six rebounds, and six assists.
 
For the Bears, Camryn London led all scorers with 34 points, including 13 of 18 from the foul line.
 
After a tight first quarter, the Wildcats doubled up the Bears, 20-10, and led for all, but 3:52 of the first 20 minutes to enjoy a 35-23 intermission lead.
 
The home advantage grew to as many as 16 points twice, 41-25 and 43-27, in the first half of period number three. The Bears did slice it by more than half to six points, 53-47, by the end of the third quarter.
 
Following a 3-point play by Torri Myers, FVSU increased the margin by to 11 points, 58-48, with 8:58 remaining. The Bears scored the next 10 points for a one-possession finish to regulation, but it was a Johnson free throw with five seconds tied the game at 69. The potential Wildcats game-winning shot in regulation was off the mark.
 
FVSU will now be off until next Tuesday, Dec. 7, when it hosts LeMoyne-Owen in a 5:30 p.m. contest.
