Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Wildcats Strong Finish Enough to Overtake Dragons

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Wildcats found road success for the first time this season. Behind Jah'ne Brown's eight points in the final three minutes, Fort Valley State's strong finish was enough to overtake Lane College, 59-56, in a close women's basketball Saturday contest.

Trailing 52-46 with 3:11 left, Brown made back-to-back layup to pull the Wildcats (3-4/2-1 SIAC East) to within, 52-50. After a Lane (4-3/0-1 SIAC West) bucket, Brown added another jumper and Diamond Jones completed a fast break 3-point play, and Brown put in her fourth basket in only a 1:30 timeframe and capped a 7-point spurt for a 57-54 lead at 1:18. The Dragons scored with 34 seconds left, but Jones sank a pair of free throws at 12 seconds to make it 59-56. A potential game-tying Lane 3-pointer with six seconds was no good.

Jones finished with an FVSU high 16 points to go with five assists, two rebounds and two steals. Torri Myers chipped in 15 points on 7 of 12 shooting, six rebounds and six steals. With eight of her points in the final three minutes, Brown made 6 of 11 tries for 12 points. Nyah Dismukes, Angel Williams and Amiya Allen all had four points in the win.

Both Brailyn Tate and Kayla Simmons led the home Dragons with 13 points apiece.

FVSU held only one first-period lead, 7-6, on a Jones try 1:54 into the contest. Lane built a double-digit lead in the early part of the second frame of 11 points, 24-13 and 26-15. The visitors chipped away at the deficit until Faith Fantroy banked in a layup in the final second for a one-point halftime deficit, 30-29.

Myers pushed the Wildcats in front in first 52 second of the third quarter with consecutive buckets, 33-30. It turned out to be FVSU's only lead until edging ahead 1:30 left in the game for good.

FVSU returns home for a pair of contests starting next Thursday, Dec. 16, in a 5:30 p.m. tip against Spring Hill.
