Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Miles Post Big Finish, Overtake FVSU Women’s Hoops

FAIRFIELD, Ala. – In the first road outing of the season, the Wildcats battled all night, but they ran out of gas in the final four minutes. Leading by a bucket, Miles College took advantage of seven-straight empty Fort Valley State possessions to go on the game-deciding, seven-point spurt and 67-49 women's basketball victory.

Following a Torri Myers's eighth basket of the night, the Wildcats (2-1) clawed to within two points, 49-47, at 4:18 to go. FVSU, though, committed three turnovers and missed its next four attempts from the field, while Miles surged ahead for good to a 56-47 advantage with 1:23 remaining.

Guard Diamond Jones netted 9-of-11 free throws and 18 points with five rebounds to pace FVSU. Myers made her eight field goals on only 12 tries for 17 points and grabbed six boards. Nyah Dismukes added three points, four rebounds and four assists.

Natah Cathey led all scorers with 19 points for the home team.

FVSU had a hard time connecting on its second-half shots with only 8-of-29 makes and 4-of-17 in the fourth frame. The Wildcats also downed only one of 14 treys. Miles pulled down the rebound difference, 48-41.

In a late (7 p.m. EST tip) start time and scoring wise, Myers made the night's first points 50 seconds in the contest and after Jones' lone trey almost six minutes later gave FVSU a 7-2 lead. Miles reversed the momentum to a tune of a 15-4 run over the next six minutes to jump ahead 17-11.

Jones hit five free throws in the first half's last three minutes and helped the Wildcats pull to within a point, 28-27, at intermission.

FVSU edged ahead in the third quarter by as many as three, 33-30, after back-to-back Myers and Jones field goals with 5:49 on the clock. The Bears turned a 35-35 tie into a four-point lead, 43-39, after 30 minutes of play.

FVSU returns home on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 13, in a 2 p.m. matchup with defending Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion Benedict College to start a two-game, home-and-home series. Benedict will host FVSU in game two Sunday afternoon.
