Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Chris Myers

No. 24 Benedict Strong 3rd Quarter Proves Too Much for FVSU

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – In the stiffest test in the season, the Wildcats found a tough opening 20 minutes. No. 24 Benedict College netted the second half's opening 12 points and broke open the contest for the eventual 78-47 victory over Fort Valley State in women's basketball Saturday afternoon.

A Torri Myers jumper gave the home Wildcats (2-2) a 22-21 lead with 6:27 in the second frame for what would be their final advantage. Benedict (6-0) netted 11 of the final 14 first-half points and busted out in the opening moments of the second frame for 12 more unanswered tallies to open a 19-point difference, 44-25. FVSU cut the margin to 10 points, 52-42, with 8:33 left in the game, but it could get no closer.

Point guard Diamond Jones paced the Wildcats with 19 points, including 11-of-14 from the charity stripe. Jah'ne Brown chipped in 11 points on 5-for-11 shooting and two assists. Myers added seven points and six rebounds.

Ay'Anna Bey led four double-digit visitors' scorers with 18 points, while Camryn Bostick totaled 15 points of her own.

The Tigers held the Wildcats to 3-for-25 from the field in the final two quarters and won the glass battle, 56-41.

Benedict pushed a seven-point half lead to 15 points by winning the third frame, 20-12, on the power of the opening 12-0 outburst.

FVSU led by a point three times in the contest, once in the first period (13-12) and twice in the second (20-19 and 22-21).

In the unusual back-to-back series this season, the two Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rivals will switch locations and play again on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 14, in a 4 p.m. tip-off in Columbia, S.C.
