Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Wildcats Claw, but No. 24 Tigers Second-Frame Run Proves the Difference

COLUMBIA, S.C. – In the second back-to-back series in as many weekends, the Wildcats progressed, but they could not hold on against the ranked home team. With Fort Valley State clawing closely, the No. 24-rated Benedict College women's basketball team rattled off 14 points in a row midway through the second quarter and rode it to an 84-65 victory Sunday afternoon.

Trailing 21-13 with seven seconds, a Nikki Culbreath left-wing triple to cut the FVSU deficit to 21-16 to end the first quarter. The Wildcats (2-3) tied the contest, 21-21, with the opening five second-quarter points via a pair of Jah'ne Brown foul shots and a Diamond Jones trey. After a Jones jumper pulled FVSU to within a point, 24-23, Benedict College (7-0) dropped in the next 14 points over a 4:19 period, 38-23, and held the visitors at bay the final 24 minutes of play.

Torri Myers and Brown paced the Wildcats with 15 points apiece. Myers made 7-of-11 of her field goal attempts to go with six rebounds, while Brown had four boards and three steals. Jones hit a trio of 3-pointers for 13 points. Both Nyah Dismukes and Amiya Allen chipped in six points.

The Tigers claimed the rebound advantage, 43-30, and downed 12 treys. Keondra Archie came off the home bench for 23 points on 11-of-17 shots.

The afternoon started solidly for the Wildcats as Jones drained her first 3-pointer off a Dismukes pass only 17 seconds into the contest. Culbreath sliced through the lane to tie the game at 5-5 with 3:24 gone until the first Benedict run of the day of nine points.

FVSU will have a couple days off until it hosts Savannah State on Wednesday evening, Feb. 17, in a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
