Wildcats Run to Lead, Tigers Slip Past for Second-Half Win

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – In their biggest run of the short season, the Wildcats pounced in the first half. Fort Valley State gained the momentum for a 20-point swing in the middle of the first half to lead, but Savannah State slipped past for the women's basketball win, 77-71, in the second 20 minutes Wednesday night
 
Behind by 13 points, 25-12, late in the first frame, FVSU (2-4) pounced and reversed the trend by a 27-6 margin the next 9:05 for a 39-31 lead with 2:05 in the half. After cutting the difference to three points by intermission, the Tigers started the second half on a 13-2 spurt to lead by eight, 54-46, and never gave up the advantage over the final 17 minutes.
 
The backcourt duo of Nikki Culbreath and Diamond Jones combined for 31 points and 10 steals. Culbreath led with 16 tallies to go with four rebounds and four steals. Jones added 15 points, four rebounds three assists and six steals.
 
Torri Myers posted her first double-double of the season with 10 points on 5-of-11 shooting and 11 caroms. Jah'ne Brown chipped in eight points and 10 boards. Kyla McIntosh came off the bench for 12 points of her own, including a pair of 3-pointers and Nyah Dismukes finished with eight.
 
The Wildcats forced 28 Tigers turnovers, but the visitors grabbed 50 rebounds to 43, including 20 on the offensive end. After shooting over 51-percent in the first half, FVSU had a tough-time in the second half at 9-for-39 (23.1%).
 
Forward Bria Gibbs guided Savannah State with 16 points and 18 rebounds.
 
The Tigers turned a one-point contest, 11-10, into a double-digit one in only four minutes for a 25-12 lead. FVSU then started its biggest run of the night on a McIntosh inside layup and capped into the second frame via a Culbreath trey.
 
Trailing by six points after 30 minutes, FVSU started the final period with Myers fast break bucket to cut the deficit to 59-55. Savannah State, though, netted the next six points. Culbreath did make it a 64-59 visitors lead moments later, but the Tigers pumped in back-to-back 3-pointers to end another potential Wildcats surge.
 
FVSU stays at home when it next hosts Allen University on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 20, in a 2 p.m. tip.
